Transportation

The train

- Cheap, even in 1st class. 30% discount on presentation of the international student card. No discount on sleeper trains, very expensive.

- Most of the tickets are now printed in English, but if you are given one in Arabic, ask the teller to write you the following information in English: the exact train timetable, the car number (ask: "Arabeyya kam?") And your seat ("korsi kam?").

- We do not compost his ticket, the controller takes care of it on board the train. If you can not get a ticket, you still have the opportunity to board the train and buy it directly from thecontroller (the fine, symbolic, is a few pounds).

- The wagons are non-smokers, and the Egyptians respect this rule.

- Watch out for black-market ticket sellers who specialize in hunting tourists.

- When you arrive at the station, go directly to the information desk to check which side of your train, or ask the porters. If you are loaded, there will always be a porter to help you; the fare is LE 5 per piece.

- In most trains, refreshments service, tea, cakes ... instead. The prices are reasonable, but some waiters have an unfortunate tendency to enjoy the tourists.

- A large-scale plan for the modernization of the Egyptian rail network is underway. Several stations have been redone (Ramses in Cairo, Sidi Gaber in Alexandria, Luxor), the computer system of ticket issuance has been reviewed ... New trains should come into service soon. Other improvements should follow.

Three classes

• 1st class: with reservation, air conditioning (often too strong), drinks service. Recliners and tablet in front. We are always sitting in the direction of the walk.

• 2nd class: completely correct, provided it is with reservation and air conditioning. About 25% cheaper than 1st class. If you are not a few pounds, we advise you to opt for the 1st class.

• 3rd class: it concerns only the omnibus trains which stop in the smallest villages. We have time to see the countryside and its inhabitants. We can just as well take his ticket on the train, but in this case, we do not benefit from student discounts. It is often difficult to get a seat there.

Sleeper train

The most comfortable and expensive solution.

A train leaves from Cairo, Ramses station every day at 20:15 (it is often more convenient to take it to Giza Stationcar, the station is smaller, it stops at 20:45); he arrived in Luxor 10 hours later (6 am) and in Aswan 14 hours later (so 10 am).

Double cabins (bunk beds) or single air-conditioned ones that can communicate with each other (convenient if you're traveling with children).

On board, dinner and breakfast are served in the cabin (not famous). As in hotels, it is forbidden to book for a foreigner and an Egyptian in the same cabin.

The official fare for foreigners is 110 $ (100 €) in single and 80 $ (73 €) double per person for one way Cairo-Luxor or Aswan, payable only in foreign currency.

The cabins are only on reservation, it is essential to buy your ticket at least 2 days in advance.

The bus

The bus network is very developed. Connecting them several times a day Cairo to Alexandria, Fayum, the big cities of the Delta, the Suez Canal, Upper Egypt (via Hurghada), the oasis of the Libyan desert or the seaside resorts of Sinai, the sea Red and Mediterranean. But some areas are discouraged.

They are generally air conditioned (sometimes much too much) and equipped with a video between the big cities.

It is better to reserve your place 1 or 2 days in advance. Sometimes cheaper than the train, but the latter is much more comfortable, even in 2nd class. No discount students. Unused tickets are not refundable.

From Cairo, to Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, prefer the train, faster and more comfortable. Some bus stations have been moved to the outskirts of cities (including Alexandria, Suez ...), which complicates the arrival.

Drinks and treats on board will be charged on the descent, and often at a high price.

The collective taxi

These are most often 504 Peugeot family (7 seats) or Japanese minibuses (14 seats). The price of a race is a little cheaper than that of the 2nd class train ticket on short distances. Departure when the car is complete. They drive faster than the train but stop for meal and prayer (or do not ride at all during Ramadan); finally same duration in more flexible - no reservation - and more friendly, but above all much more dangerous.
